Networking course at the University of Siena
Giambene is Associate Professor for the master level ("Laurea Magistrale") course "Networking" at the DIISM Dept. of the University of Siena.

SYLLABUS of this course (6 cfu, about 48 teaching hours, taught in English):

This course is aimed at the study of the fundamental protocols of the Internet such as: IP (addressing and routing), TCP (Tahoe, NewReno and variants) and UDP. Description of basic analytical methods for traffic engineering and service quality management: (i) Theory of M/M/S and M/G/1 queues and queue networks; (ii) Token-bucket shaping and quality assurance mechanisms; (iii) Traffic offloading and multipath-routing. Outline of software and virtualization of networks in relation to 5G/6G networks. Description of massive Internet of Things (IoT) technologies. A group of lessons will be dedicated to practical examples of network configuration based on tools such as ping, Iperf, Cisco packet tracer, and Wireshark.

Midterm test, report, and exam registrations are via segreteria online.

The course information sheet is available at the following link. The list of textbooks is provided at the following link. The slides of the course can be downloaded from the 'restricted area'. Pre-recorded video lessons are available in a g-drive folder that is available for student upon email request. The final report (book here) will be either a network pratical exercise with Cisco packet tracer, or a simple Matlab model for performance evaluation, or a short slide report on selected new advances on networking. The topic has to be selected by the student after the mid-term test. Please register your email details at the following link to receive updates on this course for the AY 2021-2022. Depending on criticalities due to covid issues and access restrictions, it will be possible upon demand to follow lesson remotely via g-meet telcos. The presence in the classroom is strongly recommended.
