Program of Advanced Database Systems, 2013-2014

Goals
Students will study the solutions adopted in the physical design of databases, with a particular focus on the technologies for crash recovery, concurrency control, distributed transaction management and efficient execution of queries. Moreover, students will be introduced to the architectures for data analysis, data mining and information retrieval.

Program
Introduction to the technologies used in physical design of databases. Data allocation and data structures adopted in DBMS. Common indexes and indexes for special application domains. Concurrency control. Disaster recovery. Query optimization. Distributed transaction management. OLAP systems. The OLAP multi-dimensional model and its logical implementation. Introduction to data mining. Examples of the technologies and the applications faced in data mining. Information retrieval and web search engines. Active databases and related SQL extensions.
