High Performance Computing
Research area: Computer Science

The activities mainly concern "Computer Architecture" (ERC: PE6_1) and “Parallel and Distributed Computing (ERC:PE6_2) with specific reference to High Performance Computing Systems consisting of more than a single processor - from two to thousands of processors like Multi-Core / Many-Core - and specific accelerators like GPUs and Reconfigurable Hardware. The main challenges that we are addressing are:

  • Efficiency-Energy: use less energy to provide the computing power necessary to applications ranging from Smartphones to Supercomputers, Datacenters, Cloud Computing with the need of processing Big-Data. Current systems provide few MIPS/Watt, the goal is being able to design systems able to reach at least 50 MIPS/Watt by 2024.
  • Programmability: systems need to be designed in such a way that they are easy to program.
