Curriculum
Franco Scarselli received the Laurea degree with honours in computer science from the University of Pisa and the PhD degree in computer science and automation engineering from the University of Florence. After the PhD, he has been supported by foundations of private and public companies and by a postdoc fellowship of the University of Florence. In 1999, he moved to the University of Siena, where he was, initially, a research associate and, presently, an associate professor at the Department of Information Engineering. Moreover, he has been visiting researcher at the University of Queensland, Australia, in 1994 and at the University of Wollongong, Australia, in 2001 and 2004. In 2013, he received the Italian scientific habilitation as full professor. Current research activity of Dr. Scarselli is in the field of machine learning, with a particular focus on artificial neural networks, information retrieval and bioinformatics. Research interests also include adaptive processing of data structures, approximation theory and image processing. Franco Scarselli is author of more than 70 publications in international journals and conferences, two of which have more than 200 citations on the Google’s Scholar Web search engine. He has been guest editor of the special issue on “Pattern Recognition in Graphical Domains” for Neurocomputing, co-editor of the book “Innovations in Neural Information Paradigms and Applications”, Studies in Computational Intelligence, Vol. 247, Springer, (2009) and co-organizers of three special sessions of KES conferences. He served as a referee for several journals, including IEEE transactions on Knowledge and Data Engineering, IEEE Transactions on Neural Networks, IEEE Transactions on Pattern Analysis and Machine Learning, Neural Computation, and Neural Networks. Franco Scarselli has been involved in more than 15 research projects focused on machine learning and information retrieval founded by Italian Ministry of Education (MIUR and CONFIN schemes), University of Siena (PAR scheme), Australian Research Council (linkage international and discovery schemes), and non--governative companies.
